Historical Event

Zera Yacob's philosophical retreat (c. 1630s)

The Ethiopian philosopher Zera Yacob withdrew to a cave to escape religious persecution under Emperor Susenyos, where he developed a rationalist philosophical system independently of European Enlightenment thought, later dictating his Hatata (Inquiry) to his student Walda Heywat.

Why This Matters

Zera Yacob's work predates Descartes-style European rationalism and directly challenges the assumption that systematic rationalist philosophy originated in Europe.
