Historical Event

Yanga's Rebellion and the Founding of San Lorenzo de los Negros (1609-1618)

Gaspar Yanga, an enslaved African who had escaped Spanish plantations near Veracruz decades earlier, led a maroon community that fought Spanish forces to a standstill in 1609. After years of negotiation, Spain formally recognized the settlement in 1618, making it the first officially sanctioned free town of formerly enslaved Africans in the Americas.

Why This Matters

San Lorenzo de los Negros predates every other free Black town in the hemisphere by decades and shows that organized, negotiated Black sovereignty was achieved through armed resistance rather than granted as colonial charity.
