Historical Event
Yaa Asantewaa War of the Golden Stool (1900)
In 1900, Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of the Edweso kingdom in the Ashanti Confederacy, led a military uprising against British colonialism after the British governor demanded the sacred Golden Stool of the Ashanti — the spiritual symbol of the nation's soul. She organized and commanded an army of thousands in the last major war led by an African woman against colonial rule.
Why This Matters
Yaa Asantewaa's war demonstrates that African resistance to colonialism was continuous, sophisticated, and led by women — her story bridges precolonial Akan civilization with modern Pan-African identity and the global tradition of Black women's political leadership.
