Historical Event
Surinamese independence-era migration and the Bijlmermeer
Suriname's 1975 independence included a time-limited window for citizens to claim Dutch citizenship, producing a concentrated migration surge to the Netherlands. Many arriving families were directed into the Bijlmermeer, a large modernist Amsterdam housing development that had been built for a Dutch middle class that never moved in.
Why This Matters
The Bijlmermeer shows how migration timing and an unrelated urban planning failure can combine to produce a racialized neighborhood stigma that reflects planning decisions rather than the residents themselves.
