Organization of Afro-American Unity
The Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) was founded on June 28, 1964, by Malcolm X in New York City at the Audubon Ballroom, aiming to promote the rights and empowerment of African Americans and advocate for global black unity. The organization sought to address systemic racism and socioeconomic inequalities while fostering solidarity with African nations and their struggles against colonialism.
Why This Matters
The OAAU is significant as it exemplified Malcolm X's vision of a transnational African solidarity, linking the struggles of African Americans with those of Africans, thereby enriching the narrative of the African diaspora. By championing issues that resonated across the Atlantic, it highlighted the interconnectedness of black liberation movements, reinforcing a shared historical and cultural legacy.
