Historical Event
Founding of Al-Qarawiyyeen University (859 CE)
In 859 CE, Fatima al-Fihri founded the University of Al-Qarawiyyeen in Fez, Morocco — widely recognized as the world's oldest continuously operating university. It became a major center of Islamic scholarship connecting North Africa with sub-Saharan intellectual networks, including those of Timbuktu.
Why This Matters
Al-Qarawiyyeen's founding by an African woman challenges Eurocentric narratives about the origins of universities and higher education, and its connections to Timbuktu demonstrate the intellectual unity of the African continent before colonial fragmentation.
