Bridge the Diaspora home

Historical Event

Cape Verdean settlement of Cova da Moura

Beginning in the 1970s, Cape Verdean labor migrants to Lisbon, excluded from the formal housing market, built the Cova da Moura neighborhood themselves on the city's periphery. The community developed its own institutions, including the Moinho da Juventude cultural association, despite decades of state neglect and stigmatization.

Why This Matters

Cova da Moura is a rare documented case of a diaspora community self-provisioning housing and civic infrastructure entirely outside formal state support.
