Historical Event
Cape Coast Castle as a slave trade departure point
Cape Coast Castle, on Ghana's coast, was one of the largest and most heavily trafficked European trading posts of the transatlantic slave trade, used successively by Swedish, Dutch, and British traders. Enslaved Africans were held in its dungeons before being forced through its 'Door of No Return' onto ships bound for the Americas.
Why This Matters
Cape Coast Castle is among the best-preserved slave trade departure points and today receives large numbers of diaspora visitors, particularly during Ghana's Year of Return initiative.
