Historical Event
2005 Clichy-sous-Bois uprising
The deaths of teenagers Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré, electrocuted while hiding from police in an electrical substation in the Clichy-sous-Bois banlieue outside Paris, ignited three weeks of unrest across French banlieues nationwide in October-November 2005.
Why This Matters
The uprising remains the most significant domestic unrest in France since 1968 and forced a national debate over whether banlieue conditions reflect economic neglect, racialized policing, or both.
