Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço)
Lisbon's grand riverside square, historically known as Terreiro do Paço, was the point where ships carrying enslaved Africans docked and their captives disembarked before sale in the city. In January 2024, the association Batoto Yetu Portugal, with Lisbon City Hall, installed one of twenty historical plaques across the city here, marking the square's role in the slave trade as part of a broader effort to make the city's long-silenced African history visible in public space.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
