Monrovia, Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia
Early Republic

Founded in 1822 as the capital of the American Colonization Society's settlement for freed Black Americans, Monrovia was named after President James Monroe. It became the capital of the independent Republic of Liberia in 1847, governed by Americo-Liberians — African American returnees — for over a century.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that the African American struggle was isolated. It resonated from Paris to Lagos to Port-au-Prince.
