Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church — National Headquarters
Founded in Jackson, Tennessee in 1870, the CME Church was established specifically for formerly enslaved Black members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, who were released to form their own autonomous denomination at the end of the Civil War. Originally called the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, it renamed itself the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in 1954. The CME partnered with the AME and AMEZ in co-founding the historically important Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
