African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church — National Headquarters
Organized in New York City in 1821, the AME Zion Church earned the title 'Freedom Church' for its extraordinary role in the Underground Railroad and abolitionism. Its membership included Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Paul Robeson. Unlike many institutions of the era, the AMEZ ordained women as deaconesses and stewardesses well ahead of its time. The denomination's Charlotte headquarters coordinates its global ministry spanning the U.S., Africa, and the Caribbean.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
