Mother Bethel AME Church

Philadelphia, PA
Early Republic

Founded by Richard Allen in 1794, Mother Bethel AME Church is the mother church of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination, the first independent Black denomination in the United States. It served as a critical station on the Underground Railroad, a center for abolitionist activities, and a beacon of freedom and self-determination for the African American community.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that the Black church was only spiritual. These buildings were courtrooms, schools, organizing halls, and sanctuaries.
