The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

Montgomery, Alabama
Jim Crow

Set on a six-acre hilltop site in Montgomery, this is the nation's first comprehensive memorial dedicated to the victims of racial terror lynchings. Over 4,000 steel monuments hang from the roof — one for each county in America where racial terror lynching occurred — bearing the names of more than 4,000 victims. The outdoor memorial uses sculpture, art, and design to contextualize racial terror and its legacy, confronting visitors with the scale of anti-Black violence that shaped American society.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
