Howard University Historic District

Washington, DC
Reconstruction

Founded in 1867, Howard University became the preeminent historically Black university in America, producing generations of civil rights lawyers, doctors, artists, and politicians. The historic district — a National Historic Landmark — includes Founders Library, which served as the headquarters of Thurgood Marshall's NAACP legal team as they prepared the Brown v. Board of Education case.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that segregated education was uniformly inferior. These campuses produced lawyers who dismantled segregation itself.
