Boston African American National Historic Site

Boston, MA
Early Republic

Located on Beacon Hill, this NPS site preserves 15 pre-Civil War structures associated with Boston's free Black community, including the African Meeting House — the oldest standing Black church in the United States. The site is connected by the 1.6-mile Black Heritage Trail and documents the abolitionist movement and resistance to slavery.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
