Historical Event
Queen Nzinga leads resistance in Angola (1620s–1650s)
Queen Nzinga Mbande of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms in modern-day Angola led decades of diplomatic and military resistance against Portuguese colonialism and the slave trade from the 1620s through her death in 1663. She allied with the Dutch, led armies in the field, and established a maroon kingdom that harbored escaped captives.
Why This Matters
Queen Nzinga is one of history's most formidable anti-colonial leaders — her resistance directly connects precolonial African sovereignty to the freedom struggles of enslaved Africans in the Americas, making her a foundational figure in the Transatlantic Reconnection narrative.
