Historical Event

Incorporation of Lawnside (1926)

In 1926, the community that grew out of Free Haven and Snow Hill formally incorporated as the Borough of Lawnside, New Jersey, becoming the first independent, self-governing Black municipality north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Incorporation gave residents direct control over local government, policing, and civic institutions in a period when Black communities elsewhere in the country had little to no say over the governments that policed them.

Why This Matters

This incorporation matters because it represents the culmination of a century-long process, beginning with escaped and free Black settlers in the 1820s, that ended in full, legally recognized Black self-governance, a rare and significant achievement in the pre-Civil Rights North. Lawnside remains a living example of the kind of political autonomy that free Black communities across the diaspora sought, and in most places were denied, making its continued existence today a direct link to that founding generation's ambitions.
