Historical Event
Founding of Palenque de San Basilio by Benkos Biohó (early 1600s)
Benkos Biohó, a captured Mandinga leader, escaped Spanish enslavement near Cartagena, Colombia and established a fortified maroon settlement in the surrounding hills. Palenque de San Basilio successfully resisted Spanish military campaigns for years and negotiated a form of recognized autonomy.
Why This Matters
Palenque de San Basilio is the only fully surviving palenque in the Americas today, and its residents still speak Palenquero, a Spanish-based creole with African grammatical structure recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
