Historical Event
Mansa Musa's gold floods Egyptian markets (1324)
During his 1324 pilgrimage, Mansa Musa distributed and spent so much gold in Cairo that he caused a catastrophic devaluation of gold across Egypt and the wider Mediterranean, depressing gold prices for over a decade. Egyptian merchants and historians documented the event in astonished detail.
Why This Matters
This economic disruption caused by a Black African king's wealth is a dramatic illustration of Mali's global power — and the records left by Arabic historians constitute some of the earliest detailed written documentation of West African civilization.
