Construction of the Citadelle Laferrière (1805-1820)

Built under King Henri Christophe's orders in the years following Haitian independence, the Citadelle Laferrière is a mountaintop fortress constructed to defend the new nation against a feared French attempt to retake the island. Thousands of Haitian laborers worked on its construction.

Why This Matters

The Citadelle is the largest fortress in the Americas and stands as a physical monument to a newly free nation's determination never to be re-enslaved; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
